The Nuru children’s home is a residence for orphans, abandoned, abused and desperate children.
At Nuru, we take care of vulnerable children from a young age until they become independent adults. We give all the care a child needs as well as the best education possible. Currently, we provide schooling, shelter, clothing, medical care and psychosocial counseling for 16 orphaned children that we consider our own.
We collaborate with village's leaders and with the Tanzanian social welfare office to identify children in need. We mainly focus our help on kids from our surrounding, but we are willing to welcome children from all over Tanzania.
Whenever possible, we try to reunify children with extended family members and support them by providing food and paying for school fees. Unfortunately, most of our children have nowhere else to go, and we have to take care of them until they become self-supporting adults.
Whether they are playing, doing their homework or learning new skills, all of our children receive the individual attention and unconditional love that will allow them to become successful citizens.

"The greatest gift is a passion for reading"
At Nuru, we believe that education is the most powerful tool against poverty and that books are the key to knowledge.
Unfortunately, many Tanzanian children have never owned a book of their own. At school, it is not rare to see ten to twenty students sharing only one textbook.
To combat Tanzania's illiteracy rate, we created our own local library. "Nuru's Library" consists of more than 300 books ranging from school books to fantasy novels. We welcome every child of the village to come and enjoy one of our many great books.
To enhance their culture, imagination, and sensitivity, we encourage our children to read at least one book every month.
Our goal is to double the size of Nuru's Library within the year!

"Once you learn to read, you will be forever free"
Via Nuru’s Farm, we aim to:
Become self-sustainable by way of agricultural development.
Produce nutritious and delicious foods for the children we have at home.
Earn an auxiliary income that will support Nuru's activities through the selling of farmed goods.
We have on entire acre dedicated to the culture of various fruits and vegetables. We grow everything that the ground will allow us, that is corn, carrots, eggplants, lettuce and many varieties of salads. Also, we have around 110 fruit trees that give us bananas, mangoes, papayas, and avocados.
Our farm hosts many species of livestock. Our children are delighted to interact with animals, and we teach them to respect and to take care every living creature. In addition to the traditional cows and chickens, Nuru Farm also has pigs, goats, rabbits, and ducks.
In 2010 we built a water well of 80 mt. Since then we give water to more than 100 families living in the 2 villages close to the children's home.

FAMILIES FINANCIAL SUPPORT
In addition to our children’s home, we pursue a secondary mission to fight the rise of underprivileged families and children in our community. To do so, we provide case by case financial support to families with urgent needs. The range of our financial aid goes from 0% interest loans to simple and straightforward donations. We are also occasionally willing to donate tangible goods such as schooling materials, food or tools.
The idea behind our financial support is that instead of waiting for a child to live on the street, we take care of the problem’s root.
To be able to help a maximum of families, we regularly need more funds. The families we support have close to nothing and with just a little money can change their lives. Check Elizabeth’s story here and go to the “take action” or “donate” section if you want to help people like her.
